How to Write a Resume in the Chronological Format
Here’s how.
Before you start pounding those keys, organize your thoughts first. Effective resume writing will always spell the difference in getting the interview or not. Take stock of all your achievements and qualification. You may not be the best candidate but if you know how to write a resume you could eventually land your dream job.
Strong resumes, whether it is targeted to respond to a particular job opening or to be sent to an employment agency will require the following:
Objective
After your name, this is your real first word that the hiring manager will read, your first contact. It must convey in power packed words the reason why you are applying for the job. It is weak to say for example that you are applying for the position. It should be bold enough to express your experience and what you can do in one to two short sentences. Make it crisp. The idea is to grab the interest of the reader and to pin him down enough to make him or her to read the rest.
Note: Most resume cover letters are read once the CV satisfies the hiring manager.
Work Experience
This is the reason why you are qualified. Start with the latest employment working down. Stress your strong points. For example, if you have increased the company’s sales by so much, don’t just say it. Qualify it. Use percentages or money equivalents. If you have improved a process that contributed to productivity, state the amount of contribution it made. Just avoid exaggerations. Ultimately, your CV will be validated and so state on your resume those that can be validated on.
The Personal Data Section
Lighten up. If you have a family it is all right to state their names and ages. If you love sports say what kind. The personal data section humanizes the job seeker. There are times during the interview when the interviewer is grasping for topics that could be offered to get the interviewee to relax a little. The data section will often be referred to.
The Reference Section
Go ahead. Write in your data two or three persons that that the hiring manager could refer to. You will encounter many CV’s that say references are available upon request. Avoid that. When you place references, you are daring the company to conduct a validation. You are telling them that you have nothing to hide. It will strengthen your application.
