When you write resume offline, you are either using any of the four resume formats: chronological, functional, technical, and combination or hybrid. But if you are going to write your resume online special formats should be used. These are HTML, PDF, and ASCII Text. Unlike the offline resume formats, the 3 that are being used for online resume are not the styles but Internet codes.

HTML or the Hyper Text Markup Language is a type of web language used for document layout for web browsers. The language controls all the formatting styles including the fonts, layouts, paragraphs, margins, colors, links, and tables. For those who are familiar with the language, it is very simple. But for those who are new to HTML, the codes may be confusing. For example, HTML codes begins with <H1> and ends with </H1>. Other codes include <HTML><HEAD> that ends with </HTML></HEAD> and <p> and ends with </p> and lots more. If you will go to use HTML to create your online resume, be mindful of the codes. Any error on one of the codes would mean a different final display of the online resume.

PDF, short for Portable Document Format, is a type of file format exclusively used by Adobe Acrobat. This type is becoming more and more popular as a substitute for HTML. What is good about PDF is that you can create online resume that presents the exact image you want your readers to see. In other words, what you create would be the exact same thing you what you others to see. However, if you create an online resume in PDF, the recipient should have an Adobe Reader for them to be able to see. The good thing is that the Adobe Acrobat is readily available to be downloaded from the net.

ASCII or the American Standard Code for Information Interchange is used as a formatting style by many, if they want to post their online resume on an online job board. This format is also used when an online resume is send through an email. To avoid any forms of error while using ASCII, the document should remain left justified refraining from the use of centering format. The document should also avoid the use of bullets. Instead, - or * can be an alternative.

Any of these 3 formats would make a good online resume. It is up to you what type of format will you prefer.
